It was based on a comic book series by Jean-Michel Charlier and Albert Uderzo titled Tanguy et Laverdure. The fighter aircraft featured were the Dassault Mirage III. Made by French production company Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF) between 1967 and 1970, its original French title was Les chevaliers du ciel ( The Knights of the Sky. The three seasons were originally filmed in colour but the first season was broadcast on French TV from September 1967 in black and white, as French television was only in black and white at the time. All three seasons were later released in colour when the series appeared in a 6-DVD box in the early 2000s. This 6-DVD set is now sold out and used copies fetch high prices. It was dubbed into English, retitled The Aeronauts and shown by the BBC on UK children's TV, and in Canada on the CBC, in the early 1970s. In 1972 Rick Jones released a single of the anglicised theme tune. In 1976 a version dubbed into Afrikaans and titled Mirage, was shown by the SABC in South Africa. James wants to break the 23, 000 foot altitude record and take weather measurements while Amelia steers a balloon. Their journey encounters deadly problems, especially when James convinces Amelia to take the balloon higher than 23, 000 feet. THE AERONAUTS is a great adventure movie that might remind viewers of the adventure movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Its extremely intense, thrilling and satisfying. Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne do a great job portraying the two intrepid balloon explorers. Happily, THE AERONAUTS has no strong objectionable content. As the movie opens, Amelia Wren is haunted by the death of her husband. About two years ago, she and her beloved husband, Pierre, encountered trouble in their hot air balloon. They need to get rid of some weight in the balloon. Before Amelia could react, Pierre jumped out of the balloon to certain death to save his wifes life. Now, Amelia is on her way to take James Glaisher, a pioneering meteorologist, up in a hot air balloon to break the world height record of 23, 000 feet set recently by the French. It takes money to build a balloon, however. So, their financial backer has sold tickets to the public to watch the balloon ascend. Amelia is late arriving at the event, and James is getting impatient. When Amelia finally arrive, shes wearing a costume and does a few cartwheels on the podium, much to the chagrin of James. Amelia is then handed her little dog, who seems to be wearing a sweater vest of some kind. She brandishes the dog, eliciting cheers from the crowd, then climbs into the balloon with the dog along with a large suitcase. James protests, but Amelia waves him off and cuts the ropes holding the balloon too the ground. James keeps protesting to her about the dog, but as the balloon ascends, Amelia tosses the dog out of the balloon. Everyone is shocked until the dogs little vest turns into a parachute, and the dog excitedly descends softly to the ground and runs into the financial backers arms. The balloon keeps ascending, James brings out his meteorological instruments and starts checking them, and a flashback shows how James became interested in taking a balloon into the sky to checks his theories and take these measurements. Their ascension is suddenly disturbed when they run into an ominous raincloud. They had decided to let the balloon ascend despite the dark cloud. They throw out a couple sandbags to rise above the thundercloud. However, now a really strong gust of cold air in the cloud sends the balloon into a dangerous spin. Amelia gets thrown out of the balloon but hangs onto a rope. James manages to pull her back to safety after she climbs the rope to the basket. James and Amelia are amazed by the beauty of the clouds above the thundercloud. They are further amazed when a swarm of small yellow butterflies envelopes the basket and the balloon. These two scenes generate a couple more flashbacks showing how James and Amelia met and showing the aftermath of her husbands death. Shortly thereafter, the two balloonists finally breach the 23, 000-foot record. James wants to go much higher, but Amelia is reluctant, especially since James didnt pack the winter clothing he had promised to bring. Then, however, she remembers how his assistant had told her she had a responsibility to help James, adding that not everyone gets a chance to change the world. So, Amelia agrees to ascend further. [SPOILERS FOLLOW] However, as they rise, James begins to show signs of high-altitude sickness, making him lightheaded and delirious. He starts throwing things out of the basket to go higher. Amelia fights with him, and James starts to bleed from his nose and passes out. Amelia tries to open the hot air valve to release the gas thats making the balloon ascend, but the valve is stuck. Amelias only option is to climb the ropes on the outside of the balloon holding it together to force open the valve at the very top of the balloon. Of course, a couple other complications put that plan in doubt. Inspired by several true stories about the early balloonists, THE AERONAUTS is a great adventure movie that might remind viewers of the great adventure movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Its extremely intense and extremely thrilling. Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne do a great job portraying the two balloon explorers. THE AERONAUTS has no strong objectionable content. Theres very brief, light foul language. Also, theres some intense jeopardy thats probably too much for some children, especially younger ones. That said, James pursuit of science is somewhat humanist, but in a light way. He mostly wants to advance weather science and weather technology to find ways to save peoples lives during severe storm systems. Theres only one religious reference in the movie, when Amelias aunt and sister decide to pray when theres no word for a couple days about how Amelia and James are doing. They fear the worst, but no news is good news, so they pray for no news. MOVIEGUIDE advises a light caution for family audiences, mostly because of the intense jeopardy in THE AERONAUTS.

I'm here for my Dev handsome Patel. We had the memory of that Sir I think the word youre looking for is TRAUMA😂. I imagine that a lot of people would be bored by this film. The script is earnest and straightforward. An odd couple agree to an adventure through happenstance and they learn to work together as they overcome their past demons is a formula that is played a lot in this genre; this film leans into this aspect quite a lot. Indeed it radically departs from history-Jones' character was a man in real life-in order to do the meet-cute storyline and the dry banter between Jones and Redmayne (both exceptionally well cast) form the basis of a lot of the details of the story. This coupled with the flash back structure of each having past failings is quintessential how stories like this go. There is little in the way of the storyline that would surprise you. Balloon goes up, banter and mishaps happen. But for me this is the *charm* of the film. It is so relaxed and breezy that the tone feels like a wisp of air.

This is period film about "cutting edge" technology that was quaint 100 years ago. This is a film about a trip into the sky and the beauty found there. The film is at its best when you merely embrace the what it is; beautifully rendered experience of ballooning. The film's technical aspects are superb; the director and his editor keep the colors and vistas moving in a sensuous dance. This is one pleasing film for the eyes. Like ribbon candy this is a treat for old souls. Level 1 This deserves a wide release. Itll look gorgeous on IMAX. Also, why are there no credits for the Director and the Writer(s) in the Trailer? Cmon, Amazon. level 2 Amazon is too afraid of another flop. level 1 This is my first time hearing about this movie and by the trailer, it actually looks pretty good. level 1 Why make a film with a big screen concept, use a ton of money on special effects, then release it on VOD for people to watch it on their laptops? With that in mind, here's how much of  The Aeronauts  is actually true. The Aeronauts Characters True Story & Differences In  The Aeronauts, James Glaisher is depicted as perhaps the first meteorologist. Presenting his theories to a slate of fellow scientists, he pleads for funding, convinced that balloon expeditions could help discover how to predict the weather. He's laughed at by everyone in the scholarly community ( we are scientists, not fortune tellers. one man scoffs) until he is finally able to convince widow Amelia Wren to pilot his expedition. In real life, Glaisher was an influential scientist. Not only was he a founding member of the Meteorological Society as well as the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain, but the British Association for the Advancement of Science actually wanted Glaisher to conduct his studies. His track record included 28 ascents between 1862 and 1866, and during that time, he made several observations that were key to our understanding of the weather. Among those were the fact that wind speeds changed at different altitudes, and the way in which raindrops form and gather moisture. Wren and the perilous tale of her husband who sacrificed himself when their own balloon expedition went awry, however, is complete fable. That being said, her character was inspired by several women who did exist in the aeronautical world. Most obviously, the name Amelia is partly a tribute to legendary aviator Amelia Earhart, but in terms of backstory, including the traumatizing death of her husband, Hooper and Thorne looked at Margaret Graham, the first British woman to make a solo balloon flight, and aeronaut widow Sophie Blanchard. The Aeronauts Ascent While James Glaisher may not have embarked on this epic aerial adventure with Wren, the real 19th-century scientist did break the world record for altitude with fellow aeronaut Henry Tracey Coxwell. In explaining his reason for opting to change the character so drastically, Harper admitted that he wanted the story to appeal more to modern audiences. "I wanted it to not be two middle-aged men in a basket. I wanted it to be reflective for a contemporary audience, ”  Harper told  The List. In real life, Glaisher sought out Coxwell, a well-established professional, to help secure funding from the British Association for the Advancement of Science. And on September 5, 1862, armed with a compass, thermometers, and a platoon of pigeons (as seen in the film) the pair took to the skies and broke the world record for the highest height ever reached by a human being. Glaisher would later write about this expedition in his 1871 book,  Travels in the Air. Whilst up there, there was some claustrophobic drama, but for the most part, the thrilling aspects of the flight were exaggerated. Glaisher really did pass out as a result of the lack of oxygen (his final barometer reading before doing so was an altitude of 29, 000 feet) and Coxwell, by the time their journey had reached its end, couldn't feel his hands. It was later estimated that the pair reached somewhere between 35, 000 and 37, 000 feet in the sky. The Aeronauts Descent Because Amelia Wren is, aside from the occasional reference from reality, a completely fictional character, the scenes of potentially catastrophic danger were primarily and similarly fictionalized. Though Coxwell didn't do anything as brazen as climbing up the side of the balloon to manually begin its descent, the British scientist did have to embark on some pretty badass recoveries to help bring the balloon back down to safety. For instance, the atmospheric explorers did encounter some technical difficulties on the descent. Unable to use his hands, Coxwell managed to steer the balloon (and the passed-out Glaisher) down to the ground by pulling the valve-cord with his teeth. Because Coxwell's bravery has been so well-cited and documented over the years, some people are very upset about Harper's decision to gloss over Coxwell's entire identity. For example, Keith Moore, Head of Library at the Royal Society (the U. K. 's national academy of sciences) told  The Telegraph   how "it's a great shame" that Coxwell and his legacy were ignored. Of course,  The Aeronauts, while based on true events, is not designed to be a strictly historical reenactment. The film's thrills come in witnessing the lengths to which humans will go to satisfy their wonder, and the harrowing dangers that come with some of their more ambitious endeavors. Redmayne even went on to win. So, perhaps they hoped lightning would strike twice as they reteamed for The Aeronauts, another historical drama of human triumph and scientific endeavor. However, this one is a major misfire, stretching the bounds of patience as well as the legitimacy of "based on real events. Yet together, this odd couple goes on a fateful flight that tested their bodies, minds, and spirits as they faced dizzying altitude, freezing temperatures, and complications that demanded life-threatening remedies. All this for science! Yet this isn't just a tale of science, but one of the growing bond between an unlikely pair of allies. Redmayne leans into the flustered posh boy shtick perfected by Hugh Grant in the '90s to play the bookish Glaisher, who has a brilliant mind but a fumbling tongue. He speaks passionately about science and discovery, but all with an attitude that's vaguely apologetic, as if he worries he's being a bother. By contrast, Wren is a free spirit who not only isn't afraid to make a scene, but much prefers it. Before their big flight, he focuses on equipment and readings, while she caters to the gathered audience by wearing a colorful costume and pancake make-up, doing acrobatics, delivering a speech, and offering a parachuting puppy as a spectacular sidekick. So, the two seem poised for an opposites-attract rom-com arc, where he'll learn to loosen up and she'll learn to grow up and then kisses and marriage and presumably off-screen babies are to be had. But The Aeronauts never quite settles into this cliché. The main thrust of this film is the flight, in which the two grow close through sharing stories of their lives and sharing a love of the skies. Flashbacks usher us back to their meet-cute at a ball where both were misfits, then through flirtations and down the rocky road to this pivotal launch. However, romantic sparks only flicker. This is in part because Glaisher's true love is his work, and in part because Wren is presented as a widow still heartbroken over the loss of her co-pilot/husband. Frankly, I was relieved the film didn't end with a kiss, as there are not enough sparks to justify such a thing. Besides, not every leading man and leading lady must fall in love in 90 minutes or less. Still, the film's indecisiveness about the nature of this relationship is equal parts distracting and confounding. Far more interesting is the incredible risks the pair had to take when they'd flown seven miles high. When the frigid temperatures freeze the release valve, the ballon will not warm its rise. So, it's up to Wren to scale to the top of the massive, miles-high balloon to get them back to Earth. It's a sequence that is harrowing in concept and enthusiastically explored with Jones army-crawling like an action hero, her hands raw and bloody from cruel cold and remorseless ropes. Then a final climactic action sequence aims for heart-racing as they maneuver an unsuspecting landing. With such action, why does The Aeronauts feel so thoroughly dull? Amazon Spotlight: November 2019 Earlier this year, director Harper earned praise for Wild Rose, a drama about a single mom who aspires to be a country singer. It was a riveting film in which every frame was alive with emotion and passion. Frankly, it confounds me that his follow-up feels so woefully lifeless. The muted color palette flattens a world on the brink of discovery. The characters are flat caricatures, one a man of science with no passion for anything but science. The other is a plucky "strong female character" defined chiefly by not being like the other girls, what with their living husbands, children, and fear of being "free. The performances feel safe, offering little beyond earnestness and stiff-upper-lip British posturing. Admittedly, Jones has often proved underwhelming to me. Even when she's playing a rebel, it seems she's ever asking for permission to cut loose. But Redmayne has reached for extraordinary before, and I wonder if the pans over his diva-turn in Jupiter Ascending have scared him away from taking more risks onscreen. Whatever you might think of his portrayal of a space tyrant who speaks only in screams and whispers, you could not accuse that performance of being boring. When it comes to the clunky chemistry and restrained performances, one might argue that Thorne and Harper were hemmed in by the responsibility of telling a true story. One would be wrong, as the central relationship of this supposed biopic is absolute fiction. There was no Amelia Wren. The aeronaut who took Glaisher on this epic flight was aeronaut Henry Coxwell. But presumably, the filmmakers thought a man might look less enchanting in ball gowns dancing opposite Redmayne, in flower-covered costumes doing cartwheels, or bravely swinging about the ropes of an out-of-control balloon to rescue the leading man. Yet the romance angle never takes flight. So why make this change? Though reportedly based on a real balloonist named Sophie Blanchard, Wren feels paper-thin, as if crafted from a checklist of "strong female character" traits. Tragic backstory? Check. Outspoken? Check. Pretty, romantically available, and strong enough to appease female audience members but not so strong that she might turn off male audience members? Check. Check. Blech. In the end, Amelia Wren feels like a contrivance, not a character. So what was the point of her? Verdict The Aeronauts is a film flawed from its first concept. By blending fact and fiction so freely, Thorne and Harper turned a story of scientific discovery into a muddling romantic adventure that crashes and burns. Their acclaimed cast is wasted in roles that never rise beyond the expected. While the action sequences are engaging, little else in this bumbling historical fiction is. Which leaves me to wonder why make all these changes in the first place? As is, the would-be biopic of James Glaisher wildly reinvents his story to make a Manic Pixie Dream Girl his co-pilot. It completely erases his actual co-pilot, and plays half-hearted tribute to another unrelated aeronaut, thereby muddling her story too. All this to make a film that feels first and foremost like a compromise, then ultimately mediocre and forgettable.

Is this the first movie that has mooshed around with historical fact? Take it for what it is. The story is compelling, the production is exquisite, and the action is gripping.
